The Double Eagle on the Mesilla Plaza is a restaurant rich with local history and has been recognized as a national landmark. The house remained as a private residence for an extensive period of time until Robert O. Anderson acquired the property in 1972 and preserved the historic house. The building then underwent a major restoration in 1984 ordered by the current owner, C.W. Buddy Ritter to become the Double Eagle Restaurant. Ritter is a fifth generation Mesilla descendant, which makes him the perfect partner to this restaurant that is so deeply rooted in local history.
The restaurant is now filled with beautiful Victorian antiques that were chosen by designer, John Meigs. The dining rooms are filled with a warm glow that is generated by the light of chandeliers that sparkle off the pressed tin ceilings. Walnut and Cherry woodwork add rich textures to the encompassing ambiance that make it visually unique. These signature elements make for a dining experience that melts away the background and creates a haven of romantic solitude.
The dinner menu is upscale and elegant to match the decor. The Double Eagle is well known for their aged steaks. The cuts of meat are held in their own dedicated Beef Ageing Room - the only one in New Mexico. The steaks are held at controlled temperature and humidity until the chef’s judge that the quality, tenderness and flavor have reached its peak. One of the specialty items on the menu is the Shrimp Scampi Flambé. The shrimp are quickly sautéed in white wine, butter and lemon juice and then flambéed table side with your choice of sauce. This dish will surely enhance your dining experience. A nice way to complete your meal is to savor the Praline Parfait dessert with a cup of coffee and a flavored liqueur. The Double Eagle also features one of the finest Sunday Brunch Buffets found in the entire Southwest. The buffet has many tasty appetizers, exotic fruits, salads, omelettes made with your choice of fillings, breakfast items, luncheon entrees, wholesome muffins and breads, scrumptious desserts made by their own bakery, and a special flambé dessert prepared to order while you watch. Visit the Double Eagle tonight and enjoy a side of history with your dinner.
